What is an Infiniband Cable?

Photobucket

InfiniBand is a type of communications link for data flow between processors and I/O devices that offers throughput of up to 2.5 gigabytes per second and support for up to 64,000 addressable devices. Because it is also scalable and supports quality of service (QoS) and failover, InfiniBand is often used as a server connect in high-performance computing (HPC) environments.

The internal data flow system in most PCs and server systems is inflexible and relatively slow. As the amount of data coming into and flowing between components in the computer increases, the existing bus system becomes a bottleneck. Instead of sending data in parallel (typically 32 bits at a time, but in some computers 64 bits) across the backplane

Infiniband Frequent Questions – Q & A

Q: Is InfiniBand designed strictly as an I/O fabric?

A: No, InfiniBand offers much more. At the lowest layer, InfiniBand provides a high performance, low latency, reliable switch fabric to serve as a scalable I/O interconnect. However, InfiniBand offers higher layers of functionality that enable applications such as application clustering, fast IPC (Inter Process Communication), and SANs (Storage Area Networks).

Q: What makes an InfiniBand I/O fabric?

A: An InfiniBand fabric is built up from HCAs, TCAs, and Switches. An HCA is a Host Channel Adapter which provides the mechanism to connect InfiniBand devices to pro-cessors and memory. In addition, an HCA provides a common set of required features to which software may interface through a defined “verb” layer. A TCA is a Target Channel Adapter and is an endpoint of an InfiniBand fabric. The TCA typically pro-vides additional I/O functionality. A switch is used to connect several InfiniBand chan-nel adapters (HCA or TCA), and also to switch devices together, sometimes redundantly. Switch is the mechanism used to create an InfiniBand fabric.

Q: Does InfiniBand support RAS?

A: Yes. RAS stands for Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability. InfiniBand supports reliability with guaranteed reliable services which deliver in-order packet with multiple CRC’s (Cyclical Redundancy Checks) to detect errors. InfiniBand supports availability as it enables redundancy and supports failover by switching to an alternative path, should a link or device fail. Infini- Band supports serviceability through hot swappability and special management functions, which can be either in-band and out-of-band.

Q: What basic bandwidths are supported by InfiniBand?

A: InfiniBand supports three links (1X, 4X, and 12X) which are multiples of the basic 2.5Gb/s rate. Thus, the rates supported are 2.5Gb/s, 10Gb/s, and 30Gb/s. InfiniBand is actually a full duplex bidirectional.

DVI Cables to Connect Your PC to your HDTV!

DVI Cables

What is a DVI Cable?

The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a video interface standard covering the transmission of video between a source device (such as a personal computer) as well as a display device. The DVI standard has achieved widespread acceptance in the PC industry, both in desktop PCs & monitors. Most contemporary retail desktop PCs & LCD monitors feature a DVI interface, & lots of other devices (such as projectors & consumer televisions) support DVI indirectly through HDMI, another video interface standard. Most laptops still have legacy VGA &, in some models, HDMI ports, but not displayport or DVI. DVI was developed by an industry consortium, the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG) to replace the “legacy analog technology” VGA connector standard. It is designed for carrying uncompressed digital video information to a display. It is partially compatible with the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) standard in digital mode (DVI-D), & VGA in analog mode (DVI-A). It is also still present in some consumer tv sets, despite having been superseded in this application by HDMI, another video interface standard.

HDMI audio support

Since 2008, PC manufacturers have gradually upgraded the PC’s controller to support HDMI-output in addition to DVI. Due to electrical and pin compatibility between the DVI and HDMI, only a simple passive adapter (or DVI-D to HDMI cable) is necessary in order for the PC to output HDMI to a compatible HDMI-display (such as a television), and take advantage of HDMI features (such as audio output.)

DVI and HDMI compatibility

HDMI is a newer digital audio/video interface developed and promoted by the consumer electronics industry. Both DVI and HDMI share the same electrical specifications for the TMDS and VESA/DDC links. However, HDMI and DVI differ in several key ways. First, HDMI lacks analog VGA compatibility, as these signals are absent in the HDMI connector. Second, DVI is limited to the RGB color space, whereas HDMI supports both RGB and YCbCr. Finally, HDMI supports the transport of digital audio, in addition to digital video. An HDMI source differentiates between a legacy DVI display and an HDMI-capable display by reading the display’s EDID block.

High definition cables for the NBA playoffs

Don’t miss a play watch  Kobe Bryant with the Lakers and other NBA Play off Teams such as Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls in High Definition

It is a digital alternative to consumer analog standards, such as radio frequency(RF) coaxial cablecomposite videoS-Videocomponent video, or VGA. HDMI connects digital audio/video sources (such as set-up boxes, up convert DVD players, HD DVD playersBlu-ray players, camcorders, personal computers (PCs), video game consoles such as the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, and AV receivers) to compatible digital audio devices, computer monitors, video projectors, and digital tv’s.
HDMI follows the EIA/CEA-861 standards, a subset of VESA EDID standard. HDMI supports, on a single cable, any uncompressed TV or PC video format, including standard, enhanced and high-definition video; up to 8 channels of compressed or uncompressed digital audio; a Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) connection; and an Ethernet data connection. The CEC allows HDMI devices to control each other when necessary and allows the user to operate multiple devices with one remote control handset. Because HDMI is electrically compatible with the CEA-861 signals used by Digital Visual Interface (DVI), no signal conversion is necessary, nor is there a loss of video quality when a DVI-to-HDMI adapter is used. As an uncompressed CEA-861 connection, HDMI is independent of the various digital TV standards used by individual devices, such as ATSC and DVB, as these are encapsulations of compressed MPEG video streams (which can be decoded and output as an uncompressed video stream on HDMI). The HDMI standard was not designed to include passing closed caption data (for example, subtitles) to the television for decoding. As such, any closed caption stream has to be decoded and included as an image in the video stream(s) prior to transmission over an HDMI cable to be viewed on the DTV. This limits the caption style (even for digital captions) to only that decoded at the source prior to HDMI transmission. This also prevents closed captions when transmission over HDMI is required for up conversion. For example, a DVD player sending an up scaled 720p/1080i format via HDMI to an HDTV has no method to pass Closed Captioning data so that the HDTV can decode as there is no line 21 VBI in that format.

TYPES OF CONNECTORS

Type A
Nineteen pins, with bandwidth to support all SDTV, EDTV and HDTV modes. The plug (male) connector outside dimensions are 13.9 mm × 4.45 mm and the receptacle (female) connector inside dimensions are 14 mm × 4.55 mm.Type A is electrically compatible with single-link DVI-D.

Type B
This connector (21.2 mm × 4.45 mm) has 29 pins and can carry double the video bandwidth of type A, for use with very high-resolution future displays such as WQUXGA (3840×2400). Type B is electrically compatible with dual link DVI-D, but has not yet been used in any products.

Type C
A Mini connector defined in the HDMI 1.3 specification, it is intended for portable devices. It is smaller than the type A plug connector (10.42 mm × 2.42 mm) but has the same 19-pin configuration. The differences are that all positive signals of the differential pairs are swapped with their corresponding shield, the DDC/CEC Ground is assigned to pin 13 instead of pin 17, the CEC is assigned to pin 14 instead of pin 13, and the reserved pin is 17 instead of pin 14. The type C Mini connector can be connected to a type A connector using a type A-to-type C cable.

Type D
A Micro connector defined in the HDMI 1.4 specification keeps the standard 19 pins of types A and C but shrinks the connector size to something resembling a micro connector. The type D connector is 2.8 mm × 6.4 mm, whereas the type C connector is 2.42 mm × 10.42 mm; for comparison, a micro-USB connector is 2.94 mm × 7.8 mm and USB Type A is 11.5 mm × 4.5 mm.

Type E
Automotive Connection System defined in HDMI 1.4 specification.

Cisco StackWise Plus cables

CAB-STK-E-3M FlexStack Plus cables

CAB-STK-E The Cab-stk-e-3m & Cab-stk-e-1m Stackwise Plus cable are used in connecting Cisco switch modules; 3100G, 3110X, CBS3120X as well as the 3012 using the Cisco X2 transceiver modules and the Cisco TwinGig Converter Module.
These cables are also used for connecting the IBM BladeCenter & IBM BC-H blades.
The StackWise Plus cable is capable of data speeds up to 10 Gigabit/ second. That is plenty of headroom for these types of equipment.

stackwise plus

The CAB-STK-E-3M also helps prevent outages in case of a switch failure. The switches used are in a Daisy-chain or “Stack” configuration and are connected with these special stack interconnection cables. These cables generate a bidirectional closed loop path. Within this loop, packets are apportioned between logical counter rotating paths so that if a switch or cable failure is detected, traffic is wrapped back around across the remaining path. This allows the stack to continue to function, without partitioning, if a switch were to go offline Connectzone.com stocks CAB-STK-E-3M FlexStack cables.
Before connecting the switches in a stack, keep in mind these switch stack guidelines:

  1. Connect only Catalyst 2960-S switches in a switch stack. You cannot stack the Catalyst 2960-S switches with Catalyst 3750-E switches, 3750 switches, or 2975 switches.
  2. Install the FlexStack module and the FlexStack cable for stacking capability
  3. Length of FlexStack cable. Depending on your configurations, you might require different sized cables.

Thankfully, FlexStack, or Stackwise Plus cables come in various sizes:

CAB-STK-E-0.5M= (0.5-meter cable)
CAB-STK-E-1M= (1-meter cable)
CAB-STK-E-3M= (3-meter cable)

Connectzone is at bat for kids and our local community

Connectzone is at bat for kids and our local community-you should be too!

Lady Mavericks Softball

I believe we are not defined by what we have but rather by what we give away. Whoever eulogizes us in the end will remember kind words we gave away and generosity freely and joyfully given from our hearts. People  will recall what we contributed not what we gained. I want to tell you a story and it follows a rather improbable and winding road but if you can be patient it is a beautiful and poignant story.

29402 117084038322723 100000633821575 144686 5284593 n resized 600

It all started poolside at Campbell’s resort in Chelan Washington. I was soaking in the sun with my girlfriend when she got an obviously disturbing message on her cell phone. The message was from a longtime friend of hers telling her that her daughter was very ill at Children’s Hospital. Not many details, just enough information to make your stomach start turning. A parent’s worst fear, the horrific reminder of how fragile our children are. I hadn’t met this girl yet-but I would in the coming weeks and I am proud to have stood witness to how she affected and continues to affect our community today.

The full ramifications of her illness were understood later; my friends, friend’s daughter had acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Shock and profound sadness overcame our community and when I say community, I mean several communities actually, they include: Meadowdale High School teachers, students and coaches, friends and families, churches, the softball community, local sports heroes all the way to grocery checkers at the local QFC. You see, this little girl had a lion’s heart and touched more lives in 18 short years than most of us will ever dream of and her name is Ashley Aven. Her doctors told her she had between 6-8 weeks to live but she refused to believe that and instead of giving up she made a to do list. Her list included things like graduating from high school, attending senior prom and seeing the movie The Blind Side, all of which she did. Seemingly impossible feats given your doctors told you that you have a few weeks to live in January.

She was a beautiful high school softball player who wanted to be a pediatric nurse. She endured three difficult rounds of chemotherapy but her cancer cell count was never low enough for a bone marrow transplant. At one point during a hospital appointment, her grief stricken father Bill sat with his head in his hands and a stranger came by and put a hand on his shoulder and said to him “Big Deep Breaths”. “Big Deep Breath” or BDB as we call it, has become a mantra for many in our community and you will see cars with yellow softball shaped window stickers with Ashley’s jersey number on it, in case you are ever in the area-her number is 2 and be on the lookout for “BDB #2”.

On an early August morning 2010 Ashley Aven left us and I guess depending on how you look at it-I believe she won her battle with cancer by acting with style and grace in what I imagine to be the most frightening time in her life. Her father’s words when she passed “she doesn’t have cancer anymore”. I remember that morning very clearly, I went to the grocery store and the majority of employees were tearful while continuing about their jobs. I thought to myself “Wow-that is saying something about her life when even the grocery store staff is mourning her loss”.

Meadowdale Lady Mavs Fastpitch

Ashley’s story exemplified the idea that courage is not lack of fear-but going forward in spite of it. She proved we are not defined by our circumstances and can only be limited by our own attitudes and she demonstrated these lessons very publicly. I found this kind of wisdom in an 18 year old surprising given it is rare among many adults.

Ashley’s father has developed a nonprofit organization called “Big Deep Breath” to help other families struggling with childhood cancer. He is giving back to his community in spite of an overwhelming loss. Meadowdale High School created an annual whiffle ball tournament in Ashley’s name to help raise money for local children with cancer and last year raised $7,000. This year a new ladies softball scoreboard at Meadowdale High will be dedicated in Ashley Aven’s name during the whiffle ball tourney. Connectzone donated that scoreboard and it was a pretty easy decision to make. One of my staff-who also happens to coach softball at Meadowdale High, brought this need to our attention. Funding for schools has been so severely cut that our teachers often have to pay for their own copies-much less is there money for new scoreboards. Connectzone is grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute not just to the community but the athletic department and mostly to the girls that make up the Lady Maverick’s Softball team. Everyone wins, the players get the scoreboard, Ashley Aven’s sense of spirit will be back out on the softball field and we at Connectzone get to feel a warm sense of contribution to our local kids.

I encourage all of you to consider what you can contribute to your community. Be sure and think outside the box, contributions don’t have to be financial maybe check on an elderly neighbor, volunteer at the pet shelter or help with the school carnival. Financial contributions can be small, buy a teacher a ream of paper or offer to take your child’s baseball team for ice cream; I promise it will make you feel good. When we build strong schools-we get strong kids. If we have strong kids we get strong communities. When we build strong communities-we end up with strong cities. If we have strong cities-we have strong states, which lead to a better nation. Better nations lead to better living for everyone worldwide. But don’t get scared, it’s okay to start small.

By the way when I say build a community, I mean build it as in an action word. This building process is not a spectator sport, it doesn’t mean watch someone else do it, it means push your own sleeves up and do something.

I would love to hear what your company does for your community.

Infiniband 10G gigabit Base-CX4 cables Form Factor Xenpak SFF-8470

InfiniBand is a switched fabric communications link used in high-performance computing and enterprise data centers. Its features include high throughput, low latency, quality of service and failover, and it is designed to be scalable. The InfiniBand architecture specification defines a connection between processor nodes and high performance I/O nodes such as storage devices. InfiniBand forms a superset of the Virtual Interface Architecture.

Like Fibre Channel, PCI Express, Serial ATA, and many other modern interconnects, InfiniBand offers point-to-point bidirectional serial links intended for the connection of processors with high-speed peripherals such as disks. On top of the point to point capabilities, InfiniBand also offers multicast operations as well. It supports several signalling rates and, as with PCI Express, links can be bonded together for additional throughput.

Signaling rate

The SDR serial connection’s signalling rate is 2.5 gigabit per second (Gbit/s) in each direction per connection. DDR is 5 Gbit/s and QDR is 10 Gbit/s. FDR is 14.0625 Gbit/s and EDR is 25.78125Gbit/s per lane.

For SDR, DDR and QDR, links use 8B/10B encoding — every 10 bits sent carry 8bits of data — making the useful data transmission rate four-fifths the raw rate. Thus single, double, and quad data rates carry 2, 4, or 8 Gbit/s useful data, respectively. For FDR and EDR, links use 64B/66B encoding — every 66 bits sent carry 64bits of data. (Neither of these calculations take into account the additional physical layer overhead requirements for comma characters or protocol requirements such as StartOfFrame and EndOfFrame).

Implementers can aggregate links in units of 4 or 12, called 4X or 12X. A 12X QDR link therefore carries 120 Gbit/s raw, or 96 Gbit/s of useful data. As of 2009 most systems use a 4X aggregate, implying a 10 Gbit/s (SDR), 20 Gbit/s (DDR) or 40 Gbit/s (QDR) connection. Larger systems with 12X links are typically used for cluster and supercomputer interconnects and for inter-switch connections.

Latency

The single data rate switch chips have a latency of 200 nanoseconds, DDR switch chips have a latency of 140 nanoseconds and QDR switch chips have a latency of 100 nanoseconds. The end-to-end latency range ranges from 1.07 microseconds MPI latency (Mellanox ConnectX QDR HCAs) to 1.29 microseconds MPI latency (Qlogic InfiniPath HCAs) to 2.6 microseconds (Mellanox InfiniHost DDR III HCAs).[citation needed] As of 2009 various InfiniBand host channel adapters (HCA) exist in the market, each with different latency and bandwidth characteristics. InfiniBand also provides RDMA capabilities for low CPU overhead. The latency for RDMA operations is less than 1 microsecond (Mellanox ConnectX HCAs).

Topology

InfiniBand uses a switched fabric topology, as opposed to a hierarchical switched network like Ethernet. Most of the network topologies are Fat-Tree (Clos), mesh or 3D-Torus. Recent papers (ISCA’10) demonstrated butterfly topologies as well.

As in the channel model used in most mainframe computers, all transmissions begin or end at a channel adapter. Each processor contains a host channel adapter (HCA) and each peripheral has a target channel adapter (TCA). These adapters can also exchange information for security or quality of service. 19″ Data Rack

19″ Data Rack

19 Data Rack 23UM6 Cage Nuts for Data Rack

What is a 19″ Data Rack for?

A 19-inch rack is a standardized frame or enclosure for mounting multiple equipment modules. Each module has a front panel that is 19 inches (482.6 mm) wide, including edges or ears that protrude on each side which permit the module to be fastened to the rack frame with screws.

19-inch racks are often used to house professional audio and video equipment, including amplifiers, effects units, interfaces, headphone amplifiers, and even tiny scale audio mixers. They are also widely used for computer server equipment, allowing for dense hardware configurations without occupying excessive floorspace or requiring shelving. A third common use for rack-mounted equipment is industrial power, control, and automation hardware.

Computer servers designed for rack-mounting can include a number of extra features to make the server easy to use in the rack:

  • The server itself might have locking pins on the sides that just drop into slots on the extended rail assembly, in a manner similar to a removable kitchen drawer. This permits a very easy server installation and removal since there is no need for the server to be held in midair while someone fastens each rail to the sides of the server with screws.
  • Some manufacturers of rack-mount hardware include a folding cable tray behind the server, so that the cables are held into a neat and tidy folded channel when inside the rack, but can unfold out into a long strip when pulled out of the rack, allowing the server to continue to be plugged in and operating normally even while fully extended and hanging in midair in front of the rack. This piece of equipment thus simplifies maintenance, but at the cost of providing a restriction to airflow. (ConnectZone offers rack mounted Cable Management tools for this very set up)
  • A handle may be provided at the rear of the server rails, to help pull or push the server without having to pull on the cables.

19" 42U Data Rack

Four-and two-post racks

Racks are available with either four or two vertical posts. Four-post racks allow for mounting rails to support the equipment at the front and rear. These racks may be open in construction (similar to the traditional open-style two-post racks), or may be enclosed by front and/or rear doors, side panels, or tops.Two-post racks provide just two vertical posts; a piece of equipment can be mounted either via its front panel holes, or close to its center of gravity (to minimize load on its front panel), depending on the design of the rack. Two-post racks are most often used for telecommunication installations.
